I Broke My Computer Today
Last week I spent two days figuring out why my cursor kept jumping all over my screen and finally, after trying everything else I could think of, I found a ‘fix’ on a message board that involved just unplugging a new peripheral device. I’d just gotten an iPod and plugged it in, and bingo, the minute I unplugged it the mouse was all better again.
Unfortunately, before I found out that’s all I had to do, I did a lot of other things that are normally safe to do in an effort to find out what would work. I ran my Spyware program, my anti-virus program, and I uninstalled everything I didn’t recognize in my list of software programs, including something I’d never seen in there before–an SQL program.
So today, I restarted the computer after an anti-virus update, and it just kept restarting—over and over and over. I put it in safe mode and went into settings to try to get it to stop doing that, and then it went completely nuts, with all this DOS code coming up and them a big blue warning screen saying my hardware was corrupted.
Crap.
Other than breaking my computer (I’m on my better half’s machine right now), I put in several hours at my new merchandising job and then tried to do a number of other mechanically inclined things, none of which went well either. So I thought, crap, I’m going to watch a movie. Put the DVD in the DVD player attached to the TV and couldn’t get the thing to flip to AUX so I could watch it.
It’s going on 4:00 PM and I’ve accomplished 1) three hours of manual labor for pay, 2) the destruction of my PC, and 3) NOT watching a movie I still really want to watch, and 4) I put a pot roast in the oven.
Wow. Tomorrow has to be better.
At least I don’t work for GM. Or Chrysler.
I guess that would be worse.
